What is a Fixie Bike & Why Ride Fixed?

Posted by Regal Bicycles on

A fixed gear bicycle, also known as a fixie bike, is a single speed bicycle without a freewheel mechanism. This means that the wheels do not spin independently of the cog. In basic terms - the pedals are always moving. If you pedal forward, your bike will move forward; if you pedal backward, your bike will move backward.

All fixed gear bicycles have a single gear ratio. They are fundamentally simple machines - without the added parts required for a fully geared drive train, fixie bikes are light, durable, and mechanically efficient. Fixie riders enjoy increased maneuverability and a more energy-efficient ride, which means less work (and more fun!) for the rider!

All Regal Bicycles feature a flip-flop hub on the rear wheel, giving the owner the option to ride with a freewheel as opposed to fixed. This allows the wheel to rotate freely even when the pedals are stationary – in other words, to coast. Riding downhill on a single speed bike will give your legs a rest, since you do not have to continuously pedal as you would in fixed gear cycling!

Fixed Gear Cog versus Freewheel

Choosing to ride fixed versus freewheel is a personal choice. Fixie enthusiasts delight in the purity of fixed riding – the bike becomes an extension of your body and gives you a direct feel for traction. You’ll also get a fantastic workout. The best thing to do is try it out for yourself! To a newbie, riding fixed will feel unfamiliar at first and may take a few weeks of riding to become used to. Our bicycles are shipped with the freewheel engaged. To try out fixed gear riding, simply remove the rear wheel and flip it around.
